a bandit queen. Renu Yadav (Biography)
Renu Kumari Yadav is a Nepalese politician, belonging to the Ahir community,[1] who is currently Minister of Education. She is a member of the Madhesi Janadhikar Forum.[2]
Yadav was elected as a Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) candidate to the Pratinidhi Sabha in the 1999 election from the Saptari-3 constituency, with 17231 votes.[3] In 2002 she was elected to the central committee of the RPP.[4]
In June 2003, she was named Minister for Women, Children and Social Affairs in the Surya Bahadur Thapa-led cabinet appointed by King Gyanendra.[5] When the RPP was divided and Thapa broke away and formed the Rastriya Janshakti Party, Yadav joined RJP.
In February 2008 she resigned from the parliament and left RJP, in support of the Madhesi agitation.[6][7]
In April 2008, she won the Saptari-4 seat in the Constituent Assembly election as a Madhesi Janadhikar Forum candidate.[8] In late May 2008, she was included in the central committee of MJF.[9] She was subsequently appointed as Minister of Education and sworn in on August 22, 2008.[2]
The ruling Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh is all set to play the role of a reformatory by admitting a bandit queen. Renu Yadav, 24, was released from the Nari Niketan last May and has 15 cases of murder, kidnapping and dacoity registered against her. Her uncle Shiv Singh Yadav, an active member of the party and also an elected member of the Etawah district panchyat, is backing her efforts to join the SP.
Renu Yadav was a member of the Chandan Yadav gang, active in the ravines of Chambal, vast tracts of wasteland on the tri junction of UP, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. She was arrested in 2005, when Mulayam Singh Yadav was the chief minister of UP. Once a terror of the ravines of Chambal in Etawah and neighboring districts, she claims that she has been exonerated of all charges and also thanks the ruling Samajwadi party for her release from custody. The SP had famously admitted the original Bandit Queen of Chambal, Phoolan Devi, who was also a two term Samajwadi Party MP in the Lok Sabha. During the 2009 Parliament elections, SP had admitted another female bandit, Seem Parihaar, into the party. She is no longer active in the party, and mostly busy in Bollywood and reality shows like Big Boss.
Renu Yadav, a native of Auriyya – earlier part of CM Akhilesh Yadav’s home district of Etawah – met the chief minister in Lucknow recently and expressed her desire to join the Samajwadi party and serve the women of the poor and downtrodden classes. Her meeting with the chief minister was arranged by senior SP leader and minister Paras Nath Yadav. She also requested the chief minister to provide her with security, as she faced a threat to her life.
Earlier this month, she also met PWD minister and Akhilesh’s uncle Shivpal Singh Yadav at Sefai, the native town of the Yadavs in Etawah district. A huge crowd gathered at the PWD inspection house where she arrived there to meet the minister.
In 1994, the Samajwadi Party supremo and the then chief minister of UP, Mulayam Singh Yadav had admitted the bandit queen Phoolan Devi. Mulayam had then argued that nobody is a born criminal and he was giving a chance to Phoolan to reform herself and lead a normal life. She was twice elected to parliament in 1996 and 1998 from the Mirzapur Lok Sabha seat, before being shot dead in Delhi in 2000. An OBC, she had made national headlines in 1982 after the Behmai massacre in Kanpur Dehat district where she and her gang had killed over 12 Rajputs in a revenge killing. The then UP chief minister Vishwanath Pratap Singh had tendered his resignation following the Behmai massacre.
Renu, however, claims that she is innocent and was framed by the Etawah police. She says she was abducted by the Chandan Yadav gang on 29 November 2003 when she was going to school. She says that at the time of her kidnapping she was a minor. Her father Vidyaram Yadav of Jamalipur village in Aurriya district had also lodged a complaint with the police. Renu claims she had to remain in captivity as her father could not pay the ransom demanded by the dacoit gang. She claims that she never committed any crime but the police booked her in all the crimes committed by the Chandan Yadav gang. “The police made me the bandit queen,” she says.
