Salman Bashir is Pakistan's new High Commissioner to India. Mr Bashir, 60, will replace Shahid Malik as the Pakistan envoy.

Mr Bashir was Pakistan's Foreign Secretary from 2008 to March, 2012 before Jalil Abbas Jillani took over from him.

Mr Bashir had visited India in 2011 during his tenure as the Pakistan foreign minister and held talks with his then Indian counterpart Nirupama Rao in a review process of bilateral relations between the countries.

He had also travelled to New Delhi with President Asif Ali Zardari during a day-long private visit to India on April 8.

Mr Bashir has served as the Ambassador to Denmark, Lithuania, China and Mongolia. He also did a stint at Pakistan's Mission to the United Nations in Geneva.

The former Pakistan Foreign Secretary has been part of the Indo-Pak dialogue process following the 26/11 Mumbai attacks.
