For Rukmani Riar IAS topper 2nd Rank her job as a civil servant could be extensions of her training in social work as she has done post-graduation in social entrepreneurship and has won a gold medal from The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS). She has got the second rank in UPSC civil services in her first attempt.
Rukmani Riar's father BS Riar who is an advocate in Hoshiarpur, Punjab, advised her that she should prepare for the civil services as it provides an opportunity to work for betterment of society. Speaking on Rukmani success her father said that her daughter relied on self-study. He also said that her daughter was determined to join services and it is the reason she choose social sciences for study.
Her mother Tadbir Riar said that she was sure of success of her daughter as she was very hard working and she has made the family proud by getting second rank in UPSC civil services 2011-2012
Rukmani Riar has given credit of her success to her parents, teachers and friends. She has done her schooling from Sacred Heart School, Dalhousie. She completed her class 12 from Shivalik Public School Mohali. For graduation, she went to Guru Nanak Dev University Amritsar. She chose subjects political science and sociology as optional.

She says that consistency, hard work and persistence are the key to success. Go for it. She says that if she can do it everybody else can and nothing can stop you from achieving your goal.
