Nancy J Powell arrives in New Delhi this week and is America's first woman ambassador to India. She was nominated by President Barack Obama in December 2011.

Ms Powell has been a career member of the American Foreign Service for 34 years.

She holds the highest rank in the Foreign Service, called 'Career Ambassador' conferred on her in

Before she assumes office in India, she has been working as the Director General of the Foreign Service and Director of Human Resources in Washington.

Before that, she was the U.S. Ambassador to Nepal from August 2007 to August 2009.

In her 34 year career, Ms Powell has also served as U.S. Ambassador to Pakistan, Ghana, and Uganda. Ms Powell was assigned as the Deputy Chief of Mission in Bangladesh and Togo, Acting Assistant Secretary for African Affairs, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for African Affairs, consular officer in Kathmandu, and as Nepal Desk Officer. Her other overseas assignments include Islamabad and Ottawa. She also served in Washington as a Refugee Assistance Officer.

She has been in India before; from 1992 to 1995 serving in the American Consulate in Kolkata and US Embassy in New Delhi as a diplomat.

Prior to joining the State Department, Ms Powell was a high school social studies teacher and has studied French, Nepali, Hindi, and Urdu.

Ms Powell was born in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 1970.

An avid photographer, she says she would like to begin her day with a run across Delhi's Lodhi Gardens. She also intends to travel across India, camera in hand.
