Asha Alex Menon wife of IAS Officer Alex Paul Menon

It's not pleasant news for any woman, let alone someone three months into pregnancy. Yet, Asha Menon, wife of collector Alex Paul Menon who was abducted by Maoists in Chhattisgarh on Saturday, didn't show any sign of nervousness.
"Alex did not lose his cool and composure when confronted by the Naxalites. In fact, he stepped forward and identified himself when one of the Maoists asked, 'Who is the collector?' But it's terrible that they shot two of his guards," she told Mail Today over phone from her residence in Sukma, Chhattisgarh.
"I'm the collector" were the last words uttered by Menon, the collector of Sukma district, before the Maoists disappeared with him into the forests, she said.
Asha was at home when news of the abduction reached her at around 5.30 pm, half-an-hour after the incident took place.
The couple married only six months ago. The wedding took place in Chennai. There was a flurry of telephone calls to her, from Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh, senior police officers and bureaucrats to journalists, family and friends as well.
The couple was aware of the threat to government officials in the district from Maoists. "For the past two weeks, he was cautious not to run into them. But today it was unavoidable as a gram swaraj meeting with farmers was scheduled. It is very shocking," she said.
After Menon identified himself, the Maoists asked him to board a bike. He told his captors that he had asthma and that he would need his medicines. After collecting his medicines and laptop, he went with the Maoists," Pradeep Kumar Dwivedi, a close friend of the Menons, said from Dantewada in Chhattisgarh.
"Alex was a favourite among villagers. For, he was pro-development rather than being anti-Maoist. Committed to uplift the poor, he was interested in implementing government schemes such as the MNREGA. This had won him awards," K. S. Nagarajan, an IT consultant and the collector's friend, said.
