 He led the Socialist Party through 11 years -- years fraught with divisions and two consecutive presidential defeats. Now, François Hollande will have to show the French, and the world, that he brings the talents of a statesman to the table, not just the fact that he's not Mr Sarkozy. At 57, he won the presidency in a campaign that reflected his personality -- slow and steady. Like the tortoise in Aesop's fable, he managed to overtake the hyperactive hare in front of him and win the race without ever igniting passions. And after a strong performance in his only debate with the tough-tongued Mr Sarkozy, Mr Hollande's looking ready to slip right into his new role as head of state. Here's your 10-point cheatsheet on France's new President. 1. François Hollande is the second Socialist President of the current and fifth French Republic which was constituted in 1958. The last French Socialist President was François Mitterand, well known for the abolition of capital punishment in 1981. 2. Mr Hollande wants to change the way Europe tackles the sovereign debt crisis. He believes harsh austerity is not the only solution. He says France and all of Europe should make efforts to spur growth. His position is the antithesis of the German position that would like to see countries like Greece practice rigour in exchange of bailouts. Mr Hollande believes Italy, Spain and Greece will be relieved that France will ask for a renegotiation of the European treaty that demands austerity from EU member states. The treaty was reached after joint efforts made by German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Nicolas Sarkozy, France's outgoing President. The Sarkozy-Merkel team was often called "Merkozy". The Franco-German "couple" will now be renamed "Merkollande" 3. Riding on an anti-Sarkozy wave, Mr Hollande promised to become a "normal president." His campaign slogan was "Change-is now". Towards the end of a hectic electoral campaign he was seen buying his groceries in a supermarket. He has vowed to slap a 75% fine on those earning more than million euros in France. He also believes the excesses of the financial markets should be controlled. During the campaign, he accused Nicolas Sarkozy of being the President of the rich. Hollande himself is a graduate of France's top elite school for officials called ENA (Ecole Nationale d'Administration). He also went to Europe's number one business school HEC. He was the First Secretary of the Social Party for 11 years. 4. François Hollande says he will not encourage divisive politics. In his first speech as President he said "No child of the Republic will be abandoned... or discriminated against". He said citizens of immigrant origin were an asset for France. There have been several rap scores and videos made with his speeches. He was seen travelling on suburban trains. He is a big favourite now in France's poor suburbs where a large population of people of North African muslim origins is concentrated. 5. Education will be one of Mr Hollande's top priority. He says he will create more than 60,000 jobs in the french national education system. His critics say this will add to public spending. Hollande says he wants to come to the rescue of France's youth. In his first speech after winning the election he said he wants to work for "jeunesse and justice" (youth and justice). He wants to work towards making "French dream" come true "so that our children lead a better life than ours" 6. "Justice" is a word that figures a lot in his speeches. Mr Hollande favours same sex marriage and adoption by homosexual couples. He wants to legalise a form of euthanisia. He even spoke of a Ministry for Women's rights. Foreigners living in France he says, should be able to participate in municipal elections. 7. Mr Hollande is known for his sense of humour. His supporters say it's his secret weapon- he doesn't look like he could make people laugh but he does. His critics on the other hand find this quality irksome. They call him "Mr Little Jokes" 8. Mr Hollande spent 22 years with his companion Segolène Royale who was Nicolas Sarkozy's rival in the last Presidential elections in 2007. They were still together when she was campaigning. Royal went upto the second round but was defeated by Mr Sarkozy. Soon after, Mr Hollande and Ms Royal were separated. His current companion is Valerie Trierweiler, a french journalist. Trierweiler was asked to quit political reporting after her association with Mr Hollande became known. 9. His rivals and even his own party members have often underestimated him. Mr Sarkozy is supposed to have described him as "useless" and "incompetent". He has often been criticised for lacking charisma. But Hollande came across as a cool yet combative orator in the televised debate against Mr Sarkozy. Mr Hollande worked on weigh loss regime to shed 20 kgs for this campaign. 10. Mr Hollande is likely to support India's permanent membership bid to the UNSC and believes the IMF chief should not be only an from Europe or America. Expected to take office in a little over a week, Hollande's first foreign trip as President is likely to be Germany. He is also going to meet Obama at the G8 summit with barely 2-3 days of taking office. He will also be in Chicago for the NATO summit.

 The World Bank on Monday selected Jim Yong Kim as its new president. Mr Kim, president of Dartmouth College, will assume his new post on July 1 this year. Here is a look at the life of the new World Bank president. Born in 1959 in Seoul, South Korea, Kim moved with his family to the United States at the age of five and grew up in Muscatine, Iowa. His father, a dentist, taught at the University of Iowa, where his mother received her PhD in philosophy. He attended Muscatine High School, where he was valedictorian and president of his class and played quarterback for the football team. Kim graduated with an AB magna cum laude from Brown University in 1982. He earned an MD from Harvard Medical School in 1991 and a PhD in anthropology from Harvard University in 1993. He is married to Dr Younsook Lim, a pediatrician. The couple has two young sons. He started his career as a lecturer (1993-1995) in Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Since then, he has held various positions in the organisation, the latest being a professor of social medicine (2006-2009). He has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in anthropology, social analysis, social medicine, and global health in the medical school. Mr Kim took office as the 17th president of Dartmouth College on July 1, 2009. Apart from being the first physician to serve as Dartmouth's president, he also is an anthropologist. Before assuming the Dartmouth presidency, President Kim held professorships at Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health. He also served as chair of the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School, chief of the Division of Global Health Equity at Brigham and Women's Hospital, and director of the Francois Xavier Bagnoud Center for Health and Human Rights at the Harvard School of Public Health. He is a co-founder of Partners in Health (PIH) and a former director of the Department of HIV/AIDS at the World Health Organization (WHO). He led an academic consortium of more than a dozen institutions in developing a World Health Organization report, "Interactions Between Global Health Initiatives and Health Systems: Evidence From Countries." It was presented in June 2009 to the G8 Development Ministers' Meeting in Italy. Through his work with PIH and WHO, President Kim has helped to demonstrate that individuals previously viewed as untreatable can be treated effectively, even in impoverished settings. He led the 3 by 5 initiative at WHO, which sought to treat 3 million new HIV/AIDS patients in developing countries with antiretroviral drugs by 2005. Mr Kim's work has earned him widespread recognition. He was awarded a MacArthur "Genius" Fellowship (2003), was named one of America's "25 Best Leaders" by US News & World Report (2005), and was selected as one of TIME magazine's "100 Most Influential People in the World" (2006). He was elected in 2004 to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences-one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine-for his professional achievements and commitment to service. Brown University awarded President Kim an honorary degree in 2009, and the Brown Alumni Association honored him with its William Rogers Award for Service to Society in 2008. In October of 2010, he was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has published widely over the past two decades, authoring or co-authoring articles for leading academic and scientific journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, and Science. Kim co-authored "Global Considerations in Medicine" for Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine, 17th edition (McGraw Hill, 2008). Mr Kim has contributed to books on topics such as the global impact of drug-resistant tuberculosis and his edited volume, Dying for Growth: Global Inequality and the Health of the Poor (Common Courage Press, 2002), which analyses the effects of economic and political change on health outcomes in developing countries.</div>

Nicolas Sarkozy and Francois Hollande made it to the second and final round after the first round on the 22nd of April 2012. Hollande came out on top with 28.63 per cent of the votes as opposed to Sarkozy who got 27.18 per cent. They clash in the final round on Sunday. Incumbent President, Sarkozy (centre right, UMP) was elected in 2007 when he defeated Segolene Royal of the socialist party. Royal was at that time Francois Hollande's companion, his rival in this election. As for Sarkozy, he divorced his second wife Cécilia Sarkozy and married former model and singer Carla Bruni. Bruni and Sarkozy have a daughter named Giuilia who was born this year. He is the first President to have divorced, married and have a child in office. Some of the highlights of Sarkozy's term were the burqa ban, the eviction of Roma people, increase in the age of retirement from 60 to 62. His tax policies are considered pro rich. He spearheaded the campaign for NATO action against Gaddafi's regime in Libya. Along with Germany's Angela Merkel, Sarkozy was at the forefront when the Greece crisis struck. After the Toulouse killings, he ordered a huge crackdown on 'radical muslims' in France. Unemployment rates in France have risen during his term to 10 per cent. Nicolas Sarkozy says he will retire from politics if he loses. Francois Hollande of the Socialist Party was the first secretary of the Socialist Party for 9 years up to 2008. He has been an MP since 1988. If he comes to power, he wants to renegotiate the European fiscal pact. He is against austerity in public spending and could clash head on with Angela Merkel over how the Eurozone crisis should be dealt with. He wants to legalise homosexual marriage and euthanasia. He wants to phase out 50 per cent of nuclear energy and wants to shut down France's oldest nuclear plants at Fessenhiem. He also says he will start a ministry for women's rights. His current companion Valerie Trierweiller is a television journalist. Hollande has been calling himself Mr. Normal. 2 days before the vote he was seen shopping on his own for his groceries in a supermarket. He used to go to office on a scooter and has projected himself as someone close to the people. Nevertheless, Hollande has been to the elite school ENA (Ecole Nationale Administration) for civil service. He is also a management graduate from Europe's no 1 business school HEC. Francois Hollande says he will run for legislative elections if he loses.
