Fatou Bensouda

The 51-year-old Gambian lawyer became the first female chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court in June. The Hague-based tribunal was established in 2002 to bring those accused of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity to justice. It’s notable that Bensouda, who will be the public face of the beleaguered court, is African; to date every one of the 25 suspects who have been the target of investigations or prosecutions by the ICC have been accused of perpetrating crimes on that continent.
