A village headman was today beaten to death by a group of people following which irate locals torched houses of the accused and a few vehicles in Rajasthan's Jodhpur district.

"Keru village 'sarpanch' Suresh Chaudhary was attacked near his house in the morning. He was rushed to a government hospital in Jodhpur city where he succumbed to his injuries," a senior police officer said.

After his death, supporters of the Sarpanch protested and burt five houses belonging to the accused. A few heavy vehicles including trucks and earthmoving machine were also set ablaze by the mob.

However, no one was injured in the violence.

"One of the accused has been detained and is being questioned while manhunt is on for others," he said, adding additional forces have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order.

Primary investigation revealed that the sarpanch was targeted due to his anti-encrochment efforts in the village which is about 20 kms from Jodhpur city.
